H.E. Taaneti Maamau Given a Wonderful Welcome at Buariki

A parade by the Immaculate Heart College students to honour the Beretitenti on Buariki beach

Buariki village is the venue for the 4th Mayors General Meeting’s (MGM4) opening programme. Buariki village is an important historical village where many of the Kiribati legends are set, including the sacred shrine for Beia-ma-Tekaai.

The Mayors had to travel from Abaokoro from 5 am on that Friday, 16 June, 2018, to be able to reach Buariki village, about 25 kilometers to the north, before the arrival of Te Beretitenti.
While waiting eagerly for the popular head of state and government, the welcoming parade, consisting of students from the Immaculate Heart College, JSS students, Primary school pupils, the village Women’s Group, the island leaders and the Police constabulary, nervously ran through their marching moves several times.
Finally at about 8 AM, the Beretitenti and his team arrived. The Mayors and other VIPs from North Tarawa were all in place by then. The Beretitenti shook hands with every one and then was honoured with a Guard of Honour by the Police and a march past by the students.
