BTC is assisted by Financial Sustainability Consultants from LGNZ

Murray Staite and his wife, pictured, of MicroBusiness Services Ltd from NZ, were contracted by the Local Government Association of New Zealand (LGNZ) to assist the Betio Town Council improve its financial system and revenue generation.

The couple spent a week with the BTC staff, meeting the full Council on Wednesday 4th November, assessing revenue systems and teaching BTC’s Financial staff new knowledge and skills related to their functions.

Murray has provided similar consultancies to BTC in the past, and in 2013, he came to review the Councils financial status and produced a report that contained recommended actions to make BTC more sustainable financially. Some of the key recommendations include introducing new rates on immovable property, a roading rate, a special tourism accommodation rate, a special environmental rate and a license fee for pigs.

The EO of KiLGA also informed Murray of the great need for training in financial literacy for Finance staff of Councils in Kiribati.
